Detect, Characterize, Imagine, and Sell - your exoplanet!
This year’s Astronomy workshop is about exoplanets. You will learn some primary ways astronomers detect exoplanets, as well as how they characterize and identify its key features. You will work with real research data from space organizations, such as NASA and AAVSO, to detect and calculate properties of actual exoplanets. Participants will conceptualize what life is like on different exoplanets, and how they differ from Earth. We will conclude with you creating your own exoplanet and developing a pitch (grounded in science) on why Earthlings should move there. The team with the most informative presentation wins a prize!
Materials (images and other data) for detecting and creating your exoplanet will be provided to participants. Participants are encouraged to bring their own calculators for analyses. Participants must have an understanding of exponents.
The workshop will be held on July 23rd from 1-3 PM at the Pittsfield Library (2359 Oak Valley Dr, Ann Arbor, MI 48103) in the Muskrat Room.
Our workshop was held on July 23rd and received high ratings from attendees! Thank you to all who attended. If you are interested in attending a possible second session, please fill out our contact form.
